AUGB Oldham Branch Community Center
Having previously been based next to the current Police Station in Oldham town centre; the Oldham branch of the
Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain (AUGB) has called its current premises at 9 Scholes Street home since 1957.
Over the years, various improvements have been facilitated by the generous donations from the local Ukrainian community –
including the conversion of a row of 4 cottages into the present-day function hall.
As it stands, the current Ukrainian Centre remains the last of the four that once proudly operated in Oldham.
The hall has been the venue for many parties (Zabavy): weddings, birthdays, christenings and more.
Similarly, the centre has produced several notable Ukrainian cultural figures: most notably the mixed choir ‘Trembita’; and the Black Sea Cossacks,
a band formed from those within the community.
The hall is highly functional, and can support almost any event – with staff and volunteers sympathetic to anyone’s needs in times of both joy and sadness.
To regular patrons, the centre is affectionately known as ‘The Club’ and has, over the years, proved to be the hub of the local Ukrainian community;
culturally, socially and spiritually. A true testament to this is the service of the current committee –
for whom the past 3 decades have been spent working tirelessly for the benefit of the wider community.
